The Deep Dark Wolf (Final Sketch Process)

Digital Sketch for "The Deep Dark Wolf"

Last week I posted one of my most recent illustrations titled, "The Deep Dark Wolf". Since it has been awhile since I've updated this blog, and even longer since I've done a process-post, I figured this would be a great time to do both!

The topic for the illustration was given through the prompt, "Worst Fears." I knew I wanted it to be portfolio quality, but nothing immediately came to mind what to draw. So I started thinking about something all of my kids were afraid of and I came to conclusion of The Deep Dark Wolf (as explained in the last post he is an antagonist that occasionally shows up in my kids bed-time stories to terrorize them.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had a wealth of content and visuals to draw from inside my head, but knew everything hinged on getting the Deep Dark Wolf right. So I sculpted a mock-up of what I thought the wolf would look like:

From there I started to experiment and visually see how I might portray the creature on paper, in its environment and how the main characters might look (In regards to the wolf's design, initially the important thing was its ambiguously large size and long snout):

Once I got the feel for the wolf I began to experiment more different designs. here is one that I really liked, but  at least for this illustration was too detailed:

And then it was time to work on the composition. Originally I was going to focus on the origin Deep Dark Wolf story where my kids had a show-down with it inside his old house, which was deep in the woods and forgotten, and so I spent a lot of time experimenting with that:

Something never felt right, and I kept feeling claustrophobic, so I dialed back. Way back and found what I was looking for:

Since the illustration was so expansive, I decided to focus on the Focal Points and flesh them out with several quick watercolor/colored pencil sketches (using the draft above as my MAP or guide):

Then I scanned all the watercolor sketches in, tore them apart, assembled back together, and then painted over them digitally:

Since my characters were so small and I wanted the details to be right, I really blew up this sketch and printed it off 17x27. It was so large...well you can tell it took over my whole desk:

You might notice the picture has strange creases. Since my printer only goes 13x19, I decided to break the illustration in 4 equal parts, where I would tape it together and everything would balance out. I was using card-stock, so there was no lip or ridge between sections, and the tape on the back-side hardly ever showed through on my sketch:

Then when I was done with the physical sketching, I scanned it in (which took me 14 separate scans that photoshop thankfully stitched together for me), removed the 3 lines and cleaned up any other details.

Well this post is already long enough. Obviously I colored this sketch and was really pleased with the results. Maybe I will do a post about coloring, but I'm pretty busy and it took a lot of focus and time to get this together (as haphazard as it was).

The Deep Dark Wolf...

“The Deep Dark Wolf crept closer, watching patiently as the band of late-night adventurers headed towards his woods...“
The Deep Dark Wolf is probably my kids “Worst Fear”. This ambiguous larger than life creature was born from the stories I tell my kids at night. Slick, sly and fiendish, he obsessively fills their imaginations with surprise, thrills, and chills whenever he shows up to antagonize them.
I am currently pretty busy, but couldn’t miss out on creating something for the topic at https://www.svslearn.com this month (I love scary things!!!) Let me know what you think.
Also feel free to visit my recently renovated website, and my other social media places I keep up to date almost weekly: instagram and/or Facebook.

Merry Christmas!

For the first time in my married life, my wife actually requested something of me...she wanted a card to send to family and friends. This is the result. Haha! ^_^  I really enjoyed working on it and boy did my boys enjoy the results.

Merry Christmas everyone! May we truly have peace on Earth!

I love Christmas-time!

Something about Christmas always inspires me to do something creative for others. This year I ended up completing at least 12 projects for friends and family for the holiday season! This particular illustration was for my church's annual Christmas party. This is the 4th year I've done the poster/adds and I wanted to do something different...partially because I had just BARELY finished the fall festival one (from my last post), and partially because I wanted to try something new. Tell me what you think!

Here's what it looks like with the text:

Fall Festival poster

It's no secret that my favorite holiday is Halloween. When requested to do an add/poster for my churches fall festival, despite being in the middle of the BIGGEST project I have ever been on (and up against the deadline) I couldn't let it pass. Tell me what you think!

"A Day in the Life" Webcomic starting back up!

After a year of silence, I am proud to finally announce the starting back up of my webcomic,“A Day in the Life” during the first full week of January 2016! (Link to comic: http://dayinlife.webcomic.ws

"A Day in the Life" is a fun comic that I started a couple years ago for my wife, but due to various client projects i fell behind. Fortunately the long downtime gave me the time I needed to think about what I wanted the comic to be and experiment on how I could fit it in my schedule, while taking care of client work and creating a quality product. Well I really feel I came to a good conclusion and can practically guarantee a new comic each week for an entire year!

I have so many amazing plans, ideas and stories to pursue, so make sure to check out my previous comics, subscribe and come back to see the new ones! I promise it will be worth your time. So go ahead and check it out!!!!

My NEW Webpage (plus some other updates)

This has been awhile in coming, but I have an OFFICIAL WEBSITE now. YAY!  I am so excited and proud of it. Feel free to check it out and let me know what think:
Additionally, the website has several new illustrations (such as the ones below) which have not posted on here before:

This was an illustration I completed for a wonderful family. Normally I don’t do portraits, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I had a blast drawing and getting to know all 8 kids!

Next one is a fun dramatic illustration I made for an SVS 3rd thursday contest…which I didn’t finish it in time. I missed that the deadline was 12pm not 12am. :P haha

Art-trade with Shinya Okayama: The Lost Midnight Garden

"The Lost Midnight Garden"
2015 Watercolor, colored pencil, and digital.
By Mike Blake
Late last year I was browsing Shinya Okayama's Facebook page (link at bottom of post) and commented offhandedly to him how it would be fun to do an art-trade. Shinya is one of my favorite artists, so we have had a few conversations in the past, but this one caught me by surprise. Not only did he like the idea of an art-trade, but he immediately started making plans!

As expected, we were both pretty busy, so hammering out the details took a couple months. In the end we decided to paint something blindly for each other.  Basically we gave vague recommendations, based on some of our favorite paintings/drawings from our each others art, and began to work. I had no clue what he was painting and he had no clue what I was painting... until we received it in the mail.

Several months pass by....

Shinya was the first to finish and ship his painting (from Japan). When I opened it I was very anxious and had my wife, kids and mother in law standing around. He surprised me with a bunch of extras, but I didn't let that distract me. When I came to the painting, I carefully opened the folder it was in. Seeing the painting, I was in shock. It was magical, deep, and beautiful ...not only that it was well crafted and intricately detailed.

Seeing it for the first time left a lasting impression on me that I will never forget. He created something that surpassed my expectations and his painting will be something I always treasure. (In fact I hung it next to my studio desk so that i could use it for inspiration...I mean enjoyment!) Here is a close-up shot of the ridiculous amount of details:

Well, for various reasons I finished my painting much, much later (thank heavens he was understanding) and after building the package to ship it in,I finally took it to the post office.  As I did, I was filled with a LOT of trepidation...You see...I have never shipped something...so valuable...so FAR (Japan)! Thanfkully after a few tense weeks, Shinya received the painting... undamaged and to show how much he appreciated it, he practically hung it up the same day!

Photo of my painting watercolor, colored pencil artwork.

Anyway....much, much later... I finished editing it digitally and here is my finished piece (make sure right click and open in new window. It's meant to view large):

Honestly I think I got the better end of the deal, because man he is so detail oriented and does such a great job creating mood, space and narrative. Either way it was an honor to work with Shinya and to actually own one of his paintings (mostly so I can look at the small watercolor brushstrokes and smell the paint...yes it has a small and no I am not weird.) Also to have something my family will enjoy for years to come. Shinya if you are reading this (ahem) THANK YOU! YOU ARE AMAZING!

Btw the painting I did for Shinya, was a follow-up from what I did for Lisa Ferguson, "The Lost Garden".

Anyway go ahead and check out Shinya's other work. I promise it will be worth your time!

OH and make sure to come back soon. I have a major update coming for my webpage, Facebook, and blog in the works!!!

2014 Christmas Poster

2014 Christmas
Digital, graphite, charcoal.

It's about time for another post, and what better way to do it, then by showing off a new illustration!

This is my annual Christmas poster for my church's holiday party. This year the theme was "Caroling." Caroling made me think of a family shoveling walkways for widows and singing Christmas songs to cheer them up.  Initially I was going to depict an inner city scene (with tall buildings, and cool lighting), but it didn't feel intimate enough...so I drew them in front of  a house. Sketching up my idea, it was approved and I moved forward.

For the Graphic design aspect...I don't usually like showing it, but I was very excited how this year's turned out...so check it out below! Tell me what you think!

Anyway, with the holiday season hitting hard (still not even sure what I am going to get my wife!  Shhhhh don't tell her I said that...), another exciting project starting next week (I'll tell you more about it  later), my wife about to have a baby(Due date was yesterday), and countless other things demanding my time...it might be next year before I post again.   (Or maybe I will surprise myself. We shall see!)  So in the meantime, just in case I don't get around to it...have a good thanksgiving, Christmas, and New years!!!

The Lost Garden - ART TRADE

"The Lost Garden"
2014 Graphite, Colored Pencil, Watercolor, Digital.
Art by me.

A couple months ago, I came across the amazing work of Lisa Ferguson (https://www.facebook.com/StudioFerguson).  I instantly loved her work and decided to contact her about possibly doing an art-trade. She graciously accepted!

Since I typically work digitally, I did not have something to trade, so in-between projects I worked on something new.  The results became the piece above called, "The Lost Garden." I kind of consider it a cover to a young adult novel...though there is alot more I want to explore with the girl and the lost garden!

Lisa in turn, gave me the wonderful piece below called "Sleep." I personally think I got the better deal...as hers is amazing!  The picture below just doesn't do the original justice. Sigh...but make sure to check out the detail shot I included below.

Just look at only a sampling of what the actual picture looks like up close, WOW! Thanks Lisa!!!

Aside from her charming fantasy pictures, Lisa also does some amazing pencil portraits. Go ahead and check out her other work...

Some of you old timers on my blog, might remember this illustration from awhile ago. Well, I cleaned it up and gave it a new life. Tell me what you think!

Also, you might notice some updates occurring on my blog (cleaning things up, adding some new features, etc). I am not  sure what I like or how much I will change over time...time will tell...just be patient with me.

I'd also like to put a good word in on my webcomic. I currently update about once a week, but that might increasing soon. Go and take a look! (click on the banner above.)

The Fun and Unused...

Fun and Unused Clips.
2014 Digital.
Well, its certainty been long enough since my last post, so I figure that I owe everyone an update. Unfortunately, I can't post what I have been working on yet, so I decided to do something FUN and Unique. Basically I dug through the past year or so of my files and took snapshots from the ones that will most likely never see the light of day. Many of the illustrations are studies, while others are un-finished and/or unusable illustrations (for my portfolio). Tell me what you think!

In addition, if you hadn't already noticed, I updated my profile pic a month or so ago (see my profile pic up to the right?)  I was tired of the one I had made back in 2011 and it was time to get it up to par with my current stuff. Come on, it's 2014 already! See below...

Anyway, I am currently pretty busy, and if/when things calm down I will start updating regularly again.

What happens when an Illustrator remodels a kitchen?

Digital sketch/photo collage.
2014. Mike Blake

So early 2013 my wife and I got a GREAT deal on a house. The only catch was that it needed alot of work. Save for the kitchen(more on this later) and the main bathroom (which the floor and some of the walls had rotted through due to a leaky toilet and the previous owner removing the shower surround...while still using the tub) the house mostly needed cleaned up, patched, a new coat of paint, and the floor refinished.  Sounds simple enough right?

Well, the first sign that things weren't going to go as smooth was that my wife insisted each room have its own color...my idea was to paint the whole house white.  She thought my idea was boring, and I would agree, but I am pretty picky and a hard person to please....and looking back, having to decide a color scheme was probably one of the hardest/most frustrating things i've ever done!  I went through so many iterations of what I liked and what she liked....of what worked together and didn't work...that my brain was spinning. I'll bet my wife often wondered what nightmare she had opened.

Some of what I came up with is represented below (the second one represents more closely what I did, though since I used Crayola markers the colors are obviously off):

Finally narrowing down a small selection of color chips, we made our purchase and painted everything but the kitchen.  The kitchen also needed work, but it was functional and was probably the nicest room in the house (which isn't saying much). So we decided against working on it and making a final decision on color until that time.

Painting the walls, refinishing the floor, fixing the electrical, and  cleaning EVERYTHING else, plus a myriad of other refinishing things, the house was livable and we moved from the unfinished basement (which we had been living in for the 2 months it took for us to do the work with help of family and friends) and we had a new house!

Well...wait...what about the kitchen you ask?  Yah.....that.  Well, for financial reasons and lack of motivation we put it off and made plans to start in 2014.  So for an entire year we lived with crumbling tiles made of asbestos, multi colored walls due to cigarette smoke and ugly wall-paper we removed, and an appliance/cabinet arrangement that would make any sane person CRAZY.  The sink leaked, ants climbed under the back door, and the fan also wobbled and the light made an awful buzzing noise.  See a rough sketch below I made (back when I thought we would just leave everything as it was and repaint everything):

Motivated by the kitchen issues, over the next year, I would get a short burst of energy and would draw up ideas for the kitchen. Some are represented below:

But nothing ever came of them...up until the sleeping giant finally woke from it's long sleep from the last remodel.  Motivation hit me, about November 2013 (I promise is wasn't that I had to do all the dishes by hand myself...) and I began to spend hours and hours looking up Cabinet suppliers, and design options, and installation tutorials and so forth. Between plans for the house remodel and the kitchen, I have filled up a binder with all my "To do" lists, color/design/etc scraps, sketches, and so forth.   The kitchen actually took as much, if not more, planning than the rest of the house combined (even counting the bathroom we had to tear apart from ground up.)  My wife and I also stopped in often at local hardward/remodeling stores. I would look at colors, tile options, appliance options, countertop colors, cabinet styles/colors/sizes/etc/etc...

Aside from the COUNTLESS options one could do for cabinets, if there was anything more of a nightmare for an artist,  it is the kitchen colors...because the number of colors required  is staggering! For one thing, I had already painted the rest of the house and had picked bold colors, so that severely limited my options, and for another... let me give a run through on all the places colors could/should/can be different: Tiled floor, trim, wall color, possible accent wall, cabinet color, possible two colored cabinet (higher cabinets one color, lower cabinets another), countertop color, appliances color, backsplash tile color, cieling color, door color, etc. Each color could be unique, but must also work together, and must also fit in the rest of the HOUSE!  GAH!  I know I spent more time picking colors for the kitchen than the entire house. If that wasn't enough, I probably spent more time trying to decide between various shades of green, then ANY OTHER COLOR.

PHew. So one thing that I developed to help in this was a color relationship pic. I used Microsoft paint during my down-time at work to try different options, or what worked. I made dozens of options and would occasionally send them to my wife to see what she thought. See one below:

Still to this day, I am not completely satisfied with my final choices, but below is as close to what we have now (I made this using a rough sketch of the kitchen and mapped textures and photos in. I also made several iterations...replacing textures, or adjusting colors, etc and below is pretty close to the final):

Digital sketch/photo collage.
2014. Mike Blake
Anyway, I could spend alot more time talking about the different aspects of what I did or time I spent planning for my kitchen, but it is done. I spent more time, by far, planning than it actually took to put together. The same went for the rest of my house.  As I mentioned earlier, I have an entire binder full of plans, sketches, scraps and etc, for the house.

This project was like doing an illustration, but my client was the most demanding person I have ever worked for....Myself. Sigh...... Hope you enjoy more schematics and notes for the kitchen below:

Bubbling Brew - COMPLETE

In case you were tired of digging through my blog to find all the pages of my Illustrated poem, "Bubbling Brew" I included them TOGETHER!  I hope you enjoyed this project as much as I did.

If you are out of the loop this was my Halloween gift to everyone for 2013, but I kept getting delayed.  It is a relief to finally be done, but in the future I hope to do more stories like this (I even started work on a sequel, but haven't had time to get that far...maybe if enough of you petition, I will make it a priority? haha).  Please have your children read this and leave feedback!
